A Date for Remembrance

Ahmed Radi

Instinct for celebration
Leads the young child to collect
Candles and matches
And plead for sweet cakes,
Preferably home-made in a kitchen saturated with pleasant smells.

Anyone¹s birthday is his,
Literally,
Cries and shouts impose a transfer
To a ritual for a boy already three years old,
Whose happy birth is expressed
In three tongues.

Desperate to remove pain from his world,
He is obsessed with those lively rhythmic songs
That are addressed to him,
Only,
With the necessary presence of lemonade.
