Driving on the N3 from Joburg in the direction of Durban is fairly flat and smooth.  Flatter and smoother than most roads outside South Africa, and greener, too.  The green stretches over gently rounded hills or outstretched plateaus beside the well-maintained strip of asphalt that comprises the four-lane interstate; two lanes on each side, one for the bmw’s that zip past the kombi van taxis and the other one for the slower trucks which spew foul, black fumes.  Occasionally there’s an old, Toyota bakkie with a dog or a couple laborers in the open back.  The two sets of lanes are separated by a yellow line, perhaps even a patch of green, between them.  Black, white, yellow and the brightest green you could ever imagine.  And then there’s the sky
