The Pope Turning Pop

Felix Cheong Seng Fei

The Vatican is entering the big-money video-clip industry with its own stars to rival the best the pop world can offer: the Pope and Mother Teresa. -- The Straits Times, 3rd August 1998

Lord, in this MTV age
when image calls the shots
and music alone atones
for footage
incomprehensibly cut
in the name of art -

would you have done the same,
auditioned your parables
under the harsh eye of the camera,
rendering the divine audible
like so many beats
of the drum ?

In the ratings game,
what redeems –
the desert messenger wailing in vain
for a listener,
of the hip need for soundbites
turning the Mass, Media ?
